Kilei hakerem: nasturtium under a grapevine
Question
Is it permissible to plant nasturtium under a grapevine? The purpose of planting it there is to prevent weeds from growing in the area.
Answer
Dr. Mordechai Shomron, agronomist
Nasturtium should not be planted under a grapevine. While the plant is primarily used for ornamental purposes, it is also eaten. According to some posekim (specifically Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu), even plants planted exclusively for ornamental purposes may not be planted under or near vineyards.
