Pruning grapevines is vital to their maintenance and to prevent damage for years to come. It is generally performed during the winter when grapevines are dormant. However, the Torah explicitly forbids pruning during shemitah: "And your vineyards you shall not prune." (Melechet zemirah, Vayikra 25:4).
