Orlah for grape leaves
Question
I assume that grape leaves from my vine that is in its second year of orlah are allowed to be used.
Am I correct?
Answer
Rabbi Moshe Bloom
Correct indeed! I'm quoting our book, Orlah for the Backyard (Chapter 1, §F)
"[...] grape leaves on orlah vines are permissible for consumption. Even though grape leaves are sometimes eaten, in contrast to the grapes, they are of secondary importance. Since grape leaves do not enjoy the status of "fruit" in their own right, it is permitted to eat them even during the first three years; only fruit is prohibited during this time, not the leaves."
