Disposing vegetable scraps and seeds near a vegetable garden for fertilization

Rabbi Avraham Sochovolsky | Emunat Itecha 149, Tishrei 5786

Is it permissible to throw vegetable scraps and seeds near a vegetable garden for the purpose of fertilizing the soil?

Kilei zera'im: ginger and tumeric

Rabbi Moshe Bloom

Can turmeric and ginger be planted in the same planter together? Or do I need to create a physical barrier?

Separating between plants in flowerpots - what do I have and is the separation sufficient?

Rabbi Moshe Bloom

Shalom Uvracha!

Attached are two pictures of flowerpots which were planted with spices (a few weeks ago).  The flowerpots are mounted on a stone fence.  I was told that the spices are at least 15cm apart (does it look it?). I don’t know which spice is which.  The gardener gave the following list (although I’m not sure that all of the list is in these 2 specific flowerpots):

לואיזה
מרווה
גרניום לימוני
בזיליקום
אורגנו
טימין

Can you tell from the pictures which is which? And is there a problem of kilayim (or something else)? Kilayim now or kilayim in the future when the leaves grow and overlap?  And what I should do to resolve the problem, if any?

Criteria for plant classification and kilayim: Is the botanical definition sufficient?

Rabbis of Torah VeHa’aretz Institute

I have two questions: 1) What are the three categories according to which you can classify different types of plants vis-à-vis kilayim? 2) According to which categories are different types of plants classified today in terms of kilayim?

Kilei zera'im: Mint spreading in the garden

Rabbi Dr. Yoel Friedemann

I initially planted mint in my garden 50 cm away from my tomato plant. Later on, the mint spread towards the tomatoes. Is it necessary to cordon off the mint and uproot some of it?

Kilei zera'im: Mint and purslane

I've discovered purslane and mint growing voluntarily throughout my raised bed vegetable garden, often in close proximity to other vegetables. I had thought the purslane was a weed and ignored it but I've since learned it is very healthy and would like to consume it. Do the mint and purslane require special spacing from other vegetables to avoid an issue of kilayim?

Kilei zera'im and hydroponics

Rabbi David Eigner 5781
  1. Does the prohibition of kilayim apply to two types of vegetables grown using hydroponics?
  2. Assuming it does apply — in hydroponic cultivation, there is usually more than 12 cm between seedlings, although the tops of the leaves sometimes touch. What is the halachic status in such a case?
  3. What about cucumbers and similar spreading plants grown in such systems?

Kilei zera'im in hydroponic systems

Rabbi Dr. Yoel Friedemann

If you’re growing vegetables in a hydroponic system, does kilayim apply? Could you grow tomatoes, lettuce, herbs and cucumbers next to each other in the same larger system? Their roots would likely touch at some point.  Above the surface it would look like they are divided.

Kilayim for fruit pits

Rabbi Moshe Bloom

Are plums and peaches in the same halachic category so it’s not an issue of kilayim? Or is it an issue? I’ve been saving peach pits and someone in my house added a plum pit to the container by accident.

Compost and kilei zera'im

Rabbi Yehuda HaLevy Amichay

I have a compost heap. Naturally, seeds of various kinds also end up there together with the waste, unintentionally germinating.
Recently, pumpkin seeds sprouted there, and I decided to use the seedlings.
Is there a problem of kilei zera'im because there may be seeds of other kinds in the pile (which so far haven’t sprouted or at least haven’t grown to a noticeable size)?
Does it make a difference if I grow the pumpkin seedlings inside the heap or if I remove them and plant them in the garden?
